Speak is a story about a 9th grade girl named Melinda Sordino who calls the cops on a summer party after an "incident" happens that she defenitely isn't comfortable with. After she calls the cops, the party is crashed and everyone hates Melinda. No one at school would talk to her, so she decided not to talk to anyone, not even her parents. Her parents are confusing and frustrating, which doesn't help Melinda's problems. They argue and just give Melinda more to worry about. Also, since Melinda won't talk, her parents take her to a counselor. She won't talk for the counselor either. Nothing seems to be working for the Sordino family. She doesn't have any friends to talk to, because of the party. None of her old friends will even look in her direction. The only girl who really wants to talk to Melinda is an annoying new student named Heather. At first, Melinda just sees her as a burden, but once they hang out more, they get to become closer friends. Eventually, Heather finds a different group of girls to hang out with, that don't accept Melinda. Now, Melinda is officially all alone in a cold, hard, high school. All alone with "It". Melinda Sordino doesn't want to look at "It", talk to "It", or think about what "It" did to her that summer night at the party. Going to a new high school with "It" only makes things harder for the poor freshman. Although, in the end, things start to go smoother for Miss Sordino. The experiences she faced with "It" help her make a bunch of new friends. Just what Melinda Sordino needs. From that point on, Melinda realizes she can start over with a new slate and gain back the confidence she once lost before.
